Missing Home

It’s funny the things you miss when your away.  Stuff you take for granted.  As I travelled, I made a list in my head of the things I missed and the things I gained in return.  A lot of the things I missed revolved around food.  I missed family and friends but Facebook and Skype came in handy.  However, I could not eat Irish sausages and have a cup of Lyons tea online.

Irish Sausages & Rashers (from acorn fed pigs)

McCamberidge’s Brown Bread Toasted with Dubliner cheese (my cousin’s speciality)

Heinz Baked Beans (Full sugar and fat variety)

Lyons Teabags (not English breakfast, Earl grey or Prince of wales for feck sake…)

Tayto Crisps (not chips, Crisps goddamnit!)

Chocolate All Types (non-wax containing variety, I want it to melt on my fingers so I can lick it off..)

Bag of Chips (Not fries) after a night out

REAL Irish Pubs (Local Joe May’s so I can slag my Uncle when he gets pissed…)

Irish Banter in said local pub (witticisms such as “Jaysus, Mary you look like you’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards, good night last night so?, You’re my cup of tea alright! Fancy a pint?, To which Mary might reply:  Would ya ever go and shite…) Classic Friday night craic

Irish Comedians on Mock the Week (such as Dara O Briain)

Rare Quality Irish TV on RTE (such as Hardy Bucks & Storyland)

Talented Irish Bands (such as Rubberbandits)

Having More than 4 pairs of Shoes (heavy items do not fit in Ryanair plane, shoes cost extra…)

Chocolate Hobs Nobs dunked in Tea (only when they don’t fall in…)

Irish Christmas (with drunken relative who annoys you so you get more drunk to block it out…)

I’ve gained a lot too.  There are less bills and responsibilities on the road and more freedom to try new things.  You don’t have to compromise.  You explore new places, learn new things, meet new people, try new types of food, learn to trust your intuition and get excited about the next adventure.  You can wing it with no plans… You become more independent, confident and self-reliant.  There is nothing that is gonna prepare you for what’s around the corner, you can get everything you need on the road.  Blah, Blah, Blah… Not everything… See list above.
